Our History

We Are Non Profit Organization

Healthy Brain Cameroon (HBC) was founded in 2018 with the mission of improving mental health and well-being of vulnerable populations across Cameroon. Established by a team of passionate mental health professionals and community advocates, HBC was born out of a deep concern for the significant gaps in accessible and inclusive mental healthcare services in the country.

The first project ever implemented by Healthy Brain Cameroon was the project “Demystify mental illness in the Bamboutos”. This project was successfully carried out by a team of selfless members who put in their time and their expertise for free, in addition to contributing funds to enable the implementation of this critically important initiative. The project was pivotal in addressing misconceptions about mental illness and reducing stigma within the Bamboutos community.

Building on this initial success, HBC then created a psychiatric and psychological care center in Mbouda to provide comprehensive mental health services to the local population. This center serves as a hub for psychiatric consultations, psychotherapy, and other evidence-based interventions.

Starting as a grassroots initiative, HBC began organizing community-based sensitization programs to raise awareness about mental health issues and challenge the stigma surrounding them. Recognizing the dire need for capacity building, the organization launched a series of training workshops for healthcare providers, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to deliver quality, trauma-informed care.

Over the years, HBC’s scope of work has expanded to encompass a holistic approach to mental health support. Today, the organization operates both community-based and hospital-based interventions, providing psychiatric consultations, psychosocial support, individual and group counseling, and psychotherapy services. Through these integrated efforts, HBC aims to ensure that vulnerable individuals, including those with mental health conditions, persons with disabilities, internally displaced persons, and the elderly, have access to the care and resources they need to thrive.

Driven by a deep commitment to advocacy and empowerment, HBC also amplifies the voices of marginalized communities, collaborating with policymakers to advocate for more inclusive and responsive mental health policies. By fostering community-led solutions and partnerships, the organization continues to make strides in transforming the mental health landscape in Cameroon.

As HBC looks to the future, the organization remains steadfast in its mission to build a society where mental health is prioritized, and all individuals can access the care and support they deserve.
